National Unity Government

On March 31, 2021, the Federal Assembly Representative Committee - Committee Representative Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) declared the abrogation of 2008 Constitution and the enactment of Federal Democracy Charter which was discussed in National Union Advisory Council (NUCC) with Announcement No. 20/2021.

Then, on April 16, 2021, the interim National Union Government (NUG) was formed in accordance with FDC Part (2), announced U Min Ko Ning on behalf of NUCC .

The NUG continued the leadership of President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who were kept in detention by the junta since the attempted coup. Vice-President Duwa Lashi La acted as Acting President and former Amyotha Hluttaw Speaker of Second Term of the Hluttaw Mahn Win Khaing Than served as the Prime Minister.

The government is composed of 17 ministries, also with ministers and deputy ministers from state/ethnic organizations.

Three functions of the interim national unity government are as follows:-

1. Interim National Unity Government shall implement the political objectives, goal and political road map prescribed in this Charter.

2. Interim National Unity Government shall create space where partner political parties, ethnic armed revolutionary organizations and civil society organizations can work together in order to discuss and validate political agreements and implement the way forward.

3. Interim National Unity Government shall adopt a strategy for eradication of dictatorship, abolishment of 2008 Constitution and building of Federal Democracy Union and implement the strategy.
