Kyaw Administrative Unit of People’s Administrative Team Revises Local Prohibitions, Omits Capital Punishment

NUG

The Central Leading Committee of the People's Administration Team of Kyaw village tract, Gangaw Township, had issued Letter No. 003/010/GG(KTN)/U-1 stating that violations of its prohibitions, if proven, would be dealt with under local bylaws through trials that could impose penalties up to the death sentence. After strong criticism, on December 16 it reissued the rules in Letter No. 006/010/GG(KTN)/U-1, saying violations will be dealt with strictly.

The 23 local prohibitions in the reissued version ban commercial logging, bamboo cutting and bamboo shoot harvesting, and state that anyone who physically assaults or rebels against members of the People's Administration Team, the People's Defence Team, the People's Defence Force (PDF) or revolutionary organizations will face effective and severe action.

The version issued before these revisions banned cutting trees, cutting bamboo and harvesting bamboo shoots outright, and said anyone deemed to have verbally or physically insulted or rebelled against members of the People's Administration Team, the People's Defence Team, the PDF or revolutionary organizations would face effective action.
