Medical Family – Mandalay

Medical Family – Mandalay (MFM) is a force made up of Mandalay-based medical family members, traditional medicine family members, and people from the medical field taking part in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).

MFM opposes injustice, values equality, freedom and justice, and has set the goal of fighting to end military dictatorship under the guidance of the National Unity Government (NUG).

From the terrorist junta's coup on February 1, 2021, Mandalay medical family members began revolutionary protests together with other activists and student unions. On March 12, as the "Mandalay Medical Family Strike Column", it issued a statement titled "The Uprising Must Win", strongly objecting to violent, lawless bullying, threats, repression, arrests, torture and prosecutions of CDM staff. On March 13, it announced that it would help as much as possible those injured, killed or arrested in the protests, and it also staged "unmanned White Coat Revolution" protests.

On March 27, CDM doctor Dr. Thiha Tun of Pyin Oo Lwin Hospital, who was providing medical care to protesters in Mandalay, was killed by a bullet to the head while treating an injured person.

When the terrorist junta used every means to bar CDM medical staff from treating patients at private hospitals and clinics, MFM provided free online Telemedicine, Teleconsultation and Tele-education programmes together with experienced specialist doctors in Myanmar and abroad. These programmes also included continued education for CDM medical students still in training.

On May 3, an Interim University Council was formed at the University of Medicine – Mandalay with five groups — teachers, students, alumni, staff and outside experts — with CDM rector Dr. Khin Maung Lwin as patron. The University of Pharmacy – Mandalay, the University of Dental Medicine (Mandalay) and the University of Nursing (Mandalay) then formed interim university councils in turn, announcing that they would work in connection with the NUG.

Medical Family – Mandalay has helped displaced people in conflict areas in Chin (Mindat), Karenni, Sagaing (Kani), Kachin and northern regions, sent emergency medical teams, provided treatment through a Forward Resuscitative Team, and run Combat Medic Training courses.

In August 2021, together with the NUG and ethnic health organizations, it held the National Health Conference, attended by KNPP Vice-Chair Khu Oo Reh and Dr. Cynthia Maung of Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot. During the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, it also shared emergency treatment information, rented out oxygen concentrators and warned businesses against price gouging.

Some medical workers have been killed while taking part in the Spring Revolution: on September 25, 2021, CDM doctor Dr. Zin Lin and nurse Ma Khin Khin Kywe were killed by terrorist junta gunfire at the foot of Myaynigone flyover in Yangon. On March 9, 2022, Ma Elizabeth, a second-year student at the Bago Midwifery Training School and a member of the Free Burma Rangers (Karenni) providing health services to local people in Saung Du La village, Kayah (Karenni) State, was severely injured and killed in an air strike.

Because the terrorist junta violently crushed ground strikes, MFM has organized online strikes together with other forces, and raised funds to support treatment and armed revolutionary forces.

On March 27, 2022, together with education families, it formed the "CDM Movement and Struggle Promotion Cooperation Committee" to boost the CDM movement and better meet CDM staff's needs. MFM is also a member of the General Strike Coordination Body (GSCB), and with it, on April 22, 2022, objected to and condemned the terrorist junta's sham peace invitation and the plans of ASEAN, the AHA Centre and international organizations to put humanitarian assistance for Myanmar into the junta's hands. It has also issued warnings regarding Non-CDM staff repressing CDM staff at the terrorist junta's behest.

Taking part in many areas of the Spring Revolution, MFM in January 2023 also appealed to the public not to take part in the terrorist junta's preparations to hold an election and in census-taking, which serve to keep it in power.

During the Spring Revolution, MFM has continuously trained medical staff to provide needed public health services in conflict areas, given further training to existing medical staff, and helped supply needed medicines, and has also taken part in NUG fundraising.

It declared support for the three Northern Alliance members' Operation "10:27", launched on October 27, 2023, and on November 25, together with four other revolutionary forces and Myanmar friendship groups, donated 500 million kyat to the MNDAA for relief of displaced people, treatment of the injured, and frontline officers and comrades.

MFM invites everyone who wants to protect justice, freedom and equality to become a member, and runs an online movement called "Bring Down the Military Council So Everyone Can Live Long and Healthy".
