In Hilu Village (Kathokhee), Po Waw Township, Lo Pwar Kho District, Karenni State, the leaders of the resistance established the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP/KA) on May 2, 1957. The party's headquarters is situated in Shataw Township, Karenni State.
The Party's Central Executive Committee was established at the 14th party congress with the following members:

2. Abel Tweed - Vice Chairperson

4. Khu Daniel - Secretary 1

KNPP's active areas encompass Loikaw, Demoso, Hpruso, Shartaw, Hpa Saung, Mawchee, and Bawlakhe townships. The primary objective of the KNPP is to build peace and federalism.
The Karenni Army serves as KNPP's armed force. KNPP has participated in peace processes since U Thein Sein's administration and signed a state and union level cease-fire agreement in 2012, although it opted not to sign the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA).
KNPP has consistently opposed the military coup and provided military training to emerging Karenni revolutionary forces in the region. The Chief of Staff of the Karenni Army, General Bi Htoo, assumed the role of Commander-in-Chief of the newly formed Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) after the coup.
KNPP has taken a firm stance against negotiations under the 2008 constitution offered by the military. Joint statements have been released by KNPP in collaboration with other groups and organizations against the military regime, including NUG, CRPH, KNU, CNF, NLD, and ABSDF.
KA have provided 74 batches of basic military training up to 22 October 2022. Battles have intensified in Karenni areas post-coup, with an escalation of air strikes by the military council leading to increased civilian casualties and displacements. KNPP has also achieved victories by capturing strategic stations.
It is a member organization of the Karenni Consultative Council (KSCC) and the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC).
