On April 21, 312 civil society organizations from Thailand, Myanmar and around the world sent an open letter addressed to Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara objecting to the Thai government's April 17 statement on Myanmar, because its use of "former" before the names of detained State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint implies legitimacy for the coup-making terrorist junta.

The Thai government's April 17 statement welcomed "reports that former State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and former President U Win Myint have been moved from prison to their residences as a positive step in responding to the concerns of the international community."

The open letter from more than 300 organizations states that "Daw Aung San Suu Kyi remains in Naypyitaw prison"; that the Myanmar military, which is losing territorial control at unprecedented speed, has long used the tactic of feigning concessions to the international community; and that the signatories strongly reject the Myanmar military's attempted coup and any steps that would legitimize it.

The open letter to the Thai Deputy Prime Minister was jointly written by 226 named organizations and 86 unnamed organizations from Thailand, Myanmar and around the world.
