Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee
January 20, 2024

The "Monywa Township Public Strike Steering Committee" was established to lead the revolution of the people of Monywa Township. They were protesting against the actions of the Myanmar Army, which illegally arrested and detained the elected public leaders and members of the government, and seized state power by force. The Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee was formed on February 9, 2021.

Participating organizations in the Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee include the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (Monywa District), University Students' Union (TaKaTha) Network - Monywa, Thakhin Kodaw Mhine Peace Network (Monywa), Former Political Prisoners and New Generation Forces (Monywa), and Monywa CSOs Coordination Committee.

The Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee has been providing continued leadership in the strikes and struggles toward ending the military dictatorship, the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and detained political leaders, and implementing the results of the 2020 election. The Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee has documented and published information and experiences of political prisoners whose human rights are being violated in MyinGyan Prison, Pakokku Prison, and Monywa Prison. This includes beatings, torture interrogations, a list of fallen political prisoners due to torture interrogations, ongoing hunger strikes of political prisoners, arbitrary sentences from the court of injustices, starving prisoners, spreading misinformation, electric shock torture, putting prisoners in solitary confinements, repression and human rights violations in court, forced labor, sexual abuse of LGBT people, and banning political prisoners from reading books. In addition to such publications, information on the Federal Democratic Charter and fundamental policies on building a federal democratic union, as well as the Federal Democratic Education Policy, are also shared with the public.

The committee also participates in support handed from people to the people, especially to the communities displaced due to the war. On the occasion of Thingyan, the water festival, programs such as "Revolutionary Thingyan, the Peacock Generation with the traditional Thingyan chants for the revolution” and "Revolutionary Thingyan, People's Voice" were produced and presented to the public.

The Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee provided "political lectures for the rural peoples" and "Basic Human Rights, Federal Democracy Training" as capacity-strengthening training for local youth. They also conducted lectures on Myanmar's political history, democracy, federalism, political roadmaps, and the two COCs for a battalion in Monywa District. They collaborated with the Economic University Students' Union for a public lecture on academic freedom and opening community-based schools. Collaborating with the Monywa Economics University Students Union, they organized a public lecture on federalism, fearlessness, and federal education, as well as children's day celebration lectures, political awareness, and other public lectures on the content and ideologies of the strike.

To celebrate International Women's Day, the Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee and Monywa Township People's Administration Team jointly presented documentary images of courageous revolutionary women in action in Monywa township.

On March 3, 2021, nine revolutionary comrades from Monywa were killed due to the violent crackdown by the henchmen of the junta on Phara Ni Road (Martyr Road). March 3 marked the first day of bloodshed in Monywa after the 2021 coup. Therefore, on every 3rd of March, the committee leads activities as an anniversary memory of the crackdown on Martyr Street in Monywa City. Furthermore, the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the crackdown were documented and presented to the public.

Moreover, a statement was issued on May 14, 2023, regarding the military's continued offensive military operations and violence despite the ongoing natural disaster, Cyclone Mocha. Additionally, before the storm hit, the committee issued an emergency press release to forewarn the people and provide evacuation procedures.

The Monywa People's Strike Steering Committee has continuously led strike columns since its formation. The strike columns and strike committees with whom the committee collaborated include the women's strike column, Mongywa-High road villages strike column, a multi-village strike column of villages from Yinmarbin, SarLinGyi from Sagaing Region, Spring Revolution Strike Column of Kani Township in Sagaing Region, village oil lamp strike, Chaung U Township Youth Strike Committee, Ayardaw Township People's Strike Steering Committee, Kani Township People Strike Steering Committee, Myingyan People's Strike Steering Committee, Monywa University of Economics Students' Union, YFC Myaung Youth Network, Monywa University Students' Union, Lepantaung Mountain Major Strike group, Butalin Township Students' Union (Bakatha League), Takatha network (Monywa), Chindwin River West Bank Strike Committee, Monywa Revolutionary Youth Network, Monywa youth organization, Monywa Basic Education Students' Union, and more.
