Women Advocacy Coalition – Myanmar
The Women's Advocacy Coalition - Myanmar, (WAC-M), was established by women's rights activists, women peace builders, and groups and networks dedicated to women's rights in Myanmar.
WAC-M's mission is to put an end to all forms of military dictatorships and to establish a federal democracy that is responsive to gender-related issues. WAC Myanmar communicates its stance through various means, such as issuing statements and annoucements, open letters and closed letters to regional and international officials. Moreover, as an alliance, WAC-M continues to actively engage in various platforms to promptly raise awareness about the conditions of women and gender equality in Myanmar.
On March 8, 2022, in observance of International Women's Day, WAC-M released a statement titled "Cease Biases Immediately, Eradicate the Dictatorships”. Recognizing June 19, 2022, as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, WAC-M emphasized the importance of implementing effective penalties for perpetrators of sexual violence. The organization extended an invitation for collective action to eliminate the practice of impunity. On February 1, 2023, WAC-M issued a public statement to mark the two-year anniversary of the Spring Revolution. On March 6, 2023, WAC-M engaged in the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Subsequently, on March 8, 2023, WAC-M addressed the "Terrorist Military Council," shedding light on human rights violations, including sexual violence, carried out against women and various groups during the attempted coup. This was done through the release of a "WAC-M Research Findings Press Release on the occasion of International Women's Day 2023." The aim was to stimulate action and accountability for such violations under domestic and international legal frameworks.
WAC-M has formed partnerships with groups involved in the revolution, and is also a member organization in the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC).
