The Democratic Party for a New Society, established on October 14, 1988, emerged as a response to the Democracy Uprising in Myanmar in 1350 ME.

Following the 1988 uprising, the party was forced into exile due to being declared an illegal association in 1991.

The DPNS was founded with the following objectives in mind: 1. Achieving democracy 2. Upholding human rights 3. Ensuring justice 4. Promoting peace 5. Fostering equality

The core political concepts and values that underpin DPNS are freedom, equality, unity, and democracy. The overarching political goals of DPNS encompass: (a) Total elimination of military dictatorship (b) Ensuring full democracy and human rights protection (c) Pursuing peace (d) Constructing a democratic federal union that guarantees equality and self-determination for all ethnicities (e) Facilitating sustainable societal development

DPNS Organizational Structure: 1. National Party Conference 2. Central Election Campaign Committee 3. Central Executive Committee 4. Regional/State Election Campaign Committee 5. District Election Campaign Committee 6. Township Election Campaign Committee U Aung Moe Zaw serves as the current Chairperson of the central committee, with Daw Noe Noe Htet San as the Vice Chairperson. The Central Committee consists of the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, Joint General Secretary (1) and (2), six Executive Members of the Central Committee, and 14 Committee Members.

Statements reflecting DPNS's stance on various topics were published following the Central Election Campaign Committee meeting held from December 2 to 6, 2021. These topics include political matters concerning all nationalities, nationalism and national reconciliation, alliances, the National League for Democracy and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, CRPH and NUG, NUCC, PRCF, urban guerrilla forces including PDFs, CDMers, the junta and the Myanmar Tatmadaw, the 2008 Constitution, the peace process and the 21st-century Panglong Conference, building a federal democratic union, land confiscations, land ownership, labor movements, environmental conservation, terrorism, the fight against drugs, international aid, women's rights movements, HIV, AIDS, and COVID-19, as well as government projects.

Engaging actively in the Spring Revolution alongside Myanmar's diverse ethnic groups, DPNS fulfills its assigned roles to abolish military dictatorship. The party actively participates in strikes and disseminates articles related to the revolution and ground strike participation through the New Society Newsletter.

DPNS is also a member organization of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC).
