Members of Parliament Union (Burma)
On December 18, 1990, the National Coalition Government of the Union of Myanmar (NCGUB) was established at the headquarters of Manerplaw, based on agreements from secret meetings of the then-elected representatives of the parliament. It was formed with the assistance of the National Democratic Alliance (NDF) and the Democratic Alliance of Burma (DAB). The NCGUB was dissolved on September 14, 2012.
On September 24, 1992, the National Democratic Forces (NDF), Democratic Alliance of Burma (DAB), the National League for Democracy (Liberated Area), and the MPU joined the National Council of the Union of Myanmar (NCUB). On May 15, 1996, over 20 members of Myanmar's "Elected Pyithu Hluttaw Representatives from the 1990 General Election" held a meeting along the Thai-Burma border and formed the Members of Parliament Union (Burma) - MPU.
The goal of the MPU is to restore democracy, ensure the full enjoyment of human rights, and foster the re-emergence of a genuine union. The MPU not only played a critical role in the National Council of the Union of Myanmar (NCUB) but also closely coordinated with the parallel government, NCGUB. In 1997, NCGUB was replaced by the MPU to ensure more appropriate participation within NCUB.
It has been a member organization of the IPU since 1999. The MPU participated in the discussion forum on "Establishing the basic principles of the future federal union," held from February 9th to 12th, 2005. From this event, eight guiding principles were agreed upon as the foundation for drafting the constitution of the future federal union. The "Federal Union Constitution Drafting and Coordinating Committee - FCDCC" was established on March 18-19, 2005, to draft a federal constitution based on the identified guiding principles. The First Draft of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of the Union of Burma was completed by the FCDCC on February 12, 2006, and the second draft was approved on February 12, 2008.
On March 13, 2021, the MPU issued an exhortation document to all the people of Myanmar, stating, "As representatives of the 1990 Pyithu Hluttaw Representatives, in exile, we stand together with the heroic people of all ethnicities and extend our support to the leaders of this struggle: CRPH, CDMers, and Generation X-Y-Z, until we can escape from the current atrocities and build a free, peaceful, and democratic federal union."
On September 23 and December 1, the MPU held meetings with the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) regarding the current political situations and discussed how the MPU can offer assistance.
On August 17, 2022, the MPU issued a statement highlighting the urgent need for a transitional constitution in the Spring Revolution. The MPU is actively involved in the Spring Revolution at present. In their message celebrating the two-year anniversary of the Federal Democratic Charter, delivered on March 31, 2023, the MPU expressed concerns for the unity and the spirit of the people, given the incomplete constitution for a federal democratic union. This is necessary to address the challenge of ethnic equality and the current lack of democracy for the people.
MPU is also a member organization of the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC).
