The Burma Liberation Democratic Force is an armed force re-formed on June 27, 2023, from the Monywa Township People's Defence Force. The Monywa Township People's Defence Force (MPDF), from which it emerged, was founded on June 6, 2021, with the agreement of the Monywa Mass Strike Leading Committee, the Monywa Township People's Administration Team (PaAhPha), elected parliamentarians, town elders opposed to the military coup, CDM groups and other political forces.
Its founding declaration states that the MPDF was formed mainly on the basis of more than 200 comrades who had gone north to receive basic military training with the support of the Monywa Mass Strike Leading Committee; with the combined strength of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (Monywa District), the University Students' Unions Network – Monywa, and former ABFSU and university student union members in Monywa District as its core; and under the leadership of seven chief of staff members skilled and able to lead in their respective fields. It then operated in Yinmabin and Monywa districts under the name Monywa Township People's Defence Force (MPDF), reportedly fighting more than 80 battles and killing about 50 enemy troops.
Its four founding objectives were (1) uprooting military dictatorship and swiftly establishing a federal democratic union; (2) linking with revolutionary forces in Sagaing Region to intensify effective revolutionary battles; (3) protecting the lives and property of the people of the Monywa area from the terrorist military council's forces; and (4) linking with the NUG, the CRPH, ethnic revolutionary forces fighting the terrorist military council,
and the Monywa Mass Strike Leading Committee to systematically carry out coordinated political and military struggles.
Then, on June 27, 2023, with the goals of the liberation of the whole Bamar nation, ending military dictatorship and establishing a new federal democratic union, it dissolved the MPDF and expanded it into the Burma Liberation Democratic Force (BLDF). The BLDF now operates in two military regions and is fighting in townships including Monywa, Yinmabin, Salingyi, Chaung-U, Budalin, Pale, Depayin, Myaung, Myinmu and Yesagyo. The BLDF has declared that it fully follows the Chain of Command (CoC) led by the National Unity Government and ethnic revolutionary forces, and will take part in the path to establishing a new federal democratic union.
It also has close relations and fights together with Local PDFs in the Sagaing region and revolutionary forces not linked to the Ministry of Defence. On September 30, 2024, the BLDF and allies attacked the Myanmar military's Bilu column between Si Pa and Kywe The Chaung villages in Budalin Township; the battle lasted about three hours, many in the column were killed, more than 30 were taken prisoner, more than 70 weapons were seized, and the Bilu column was destroyed.
