The Araken League for Democracy (ALD) is a political party based in Rakhine State. Based on the 1988 People's Uprising, with the leadership of patron U Oo Tha Tun, Dr. Saw Mya Aung, with representatives of 17 townships in Rakhien State, it started in Yangon in 1988.
The party is based on the policy of building a genuine federal democratic union, which is based on democracy, equality of ethnic people, the right to self-determination, and the right to create one's own destiny. After registering with the Election Commission on 2 October, ALD ran in the 1990 elections, won 11 seats in Rakhine State.
However, the military did not recognize the election result and used the national assembly to seize the power, and the ALD party was unilaterally dissolved in 1992 by the State Law and Order Restoration Council-SLORC.
After the 2010 elections, the party was re-registered on 9 April 2012 and joined the leadership of the United National Alliance (UNA). After the 2010 election, the party was re-registered on April 9, 2012, and joined the United Nations Alliance (UNA).
In June 2013, with the belief that the interests of the Rakhine people could be further served, AND party signed an agreement to unite the two parties under the name of the Rakhine National Party (ANP) in cooperation with the Rakhine People's Development Party (RNDP). The merger started in May and was implemented after more than eight months of mutual discussions. Even under the name of ANP, it contested the 2015 election and won many constituencies in the region. In addition, the former leader of ALD, ANP Party Central Executive U Aung Tha Aung, NLD government, National Hluttaw, He was appointed as the vice president.
However, in 2017, due to policy disagreements within the party, it was re-registered under its former name ALD and re-formed with some new members.
Regarding the NLD government, on March 24, 2020, it issued a statement regarding the armed conflicts in the Rakhine region. In the statement, the party urged the President, the State Conselor, and the government to be sympathetic and review the conflict in Rakhine State, to establish a process to review and resolve the Rakhine crisis in a fair manner.
The ALD ran for 10 seats in the 2020 elections held on November 8, 2020, which could not held in nine out of the 17 townships in Rakhine State, but the party did not win any seats.
On February 1, 2021, regarding the military coup, the ALD party released the statement on February 6, 2021, that it needed to peacefully discuss and negotiate to get a solution, and the party would not accept a dictatorship and a democratic dictatorship.
After the military coup, the Union election commission was dissolved and later reconstituted the Union election commission and a new amendment to the Party Registration Act was enacted. However, ALD decided not to re-register so the ALD party was unilaterally dissolved.
