All Arakan Students’ & Youths’s Congress - AASYC
All Arakan Students’ & Youths’s Congress (AASYC) was established on October 6, 1995. In 1995, a student and youth conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand. Arakan students and youth representatives from Bangladesh, India, and Thailand were present and it was formed by unanimous decision.
In November 1988, politically motivated Arakanese students formed the All Arakan Students’ Union (AASU) in Wakhetchoung Camp on the Burma-Bangladesh Border. Later, the AASU united under the banner of All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF, Arakan regiment,) to forge solidarity with other ethnic student groups and attempt to overthrow the military regime cooperatively. In 1994, the Arakan regiment of the ABSDF founded the Arakanese Students’ Congress (ASC) in New Delhi, India, to fight the junta using non-violent methods. Then, at the 1995 Bangkok Student and Youth Conference, AASYC was unanimously established.
AASYC's vision is that Burma shall be a genuine federal democratic union, where each and every citizen of every ethnic nationality is accorded the right and opportunity for liberty, equality, and social justice. AASYC has set seven political goals, which included to promote improvement and friendship among Arakanese students and youths, to preserve Arakan’s environment and cultural heritage, to build national solidarity in Arakan, and in addition to achieve self-determination for Arakan State.
The organization is operated by seven departments, which are Publicity and Information, Youths’ Development and Ecosystem Protection, Domestic Affairs, Women’s Affairs, Finance and Management, Organizational and Public Affairs, and Research and Documentation Departments.
On January 7, 1997, an Ethnic Peoples' Seminar was held in Mae Tharaw Hta, Kaw Thoo Lei. Representatives of various ethnic groups and organizations had attended, including Rakhine, Chin, Kachin, Karen, Karenni, Kayan, Mon, Pa'O, Palaung, Lahu, Shan, Wa, and AASYC also attended. At the seminar, a four-pronged agreement on political objectives was issued, to which AASYC was a signatory , known as the "Mae Tharaw Hta Agreement". AASYC has also allied itself with democratic forces in non-violent opposition to terrorist military group. In addition, it also has alliances with the Students and Youth Congress of Burma (SYCB), Committee for Nonviolent Actions in Burma (CNAB), Burma/Myanmar UPR Forum; Ethnic Community Development Forum (ECDF), United Nationalities Youth Forum (UNYF), Indigenous Peoples/Ethnic Nationalities of Myanmar (Ips/EN) and Network for Human Rights Documentation (ND-Burma).
AASYC is working on many sides of the regional development, education, culture sector sand also continuously participated in political activities. In the political sector, AASYC participated in the process of fighting against the 7 roadmaps of the military group that was created by the 2008 constitution at all levels, and also cooperated with ethnic revolutionary forces, democratic forces to the point where the second draft of the federal constitution was approved.
It also participated in Vote No campaing for the 2008 constitutional process of the terrorist military group and also warned that if the political parties enter the election, and if the NLD took another step back of Shwe Gone Daing announcement, it would be a betrayal of those who have sacrificed on the democratic process.
Regarding the coup d'état of February 2021, the AASYC Central Executive Committee announced on February 7 that the terrorist military group violated the constitution that they drafted themselves. In the statement, the extremist nationalists, imperilaist and military dictators who have been obsessed with power for more than 70 years, would be permanently eliminated from the world of civilized society.
AASYC prepared the reports about the prevailing socio-economic conditions in the region. It is also an organization that compiles reports on human rights situations and submits reports to the United Nations Human Rights Council .
On April 16, 2021, regarding the formation of the National Unity Government - NUG, it was announced on April 19 that it was recognized as an interim government that is essential for the dissolution of the 2008 constitution, the eradication of imperialism/racism and authoritarianism, and the construction of a federal democratic union. In addition, the Central Executive Committee statement also stated that it will coordinate with the NUG as necessary for equality, self determination, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, and peace and development.
In the nationwide protests that took place after the terrorist military group took power, AASYC also collaborated with other ethnic students, and youth in nationwide strikes, and participated in various ways.
AASYC is also working for the people of Rakhine to get the information from a social networking platforms and websites that provides news reviews related to the Rakhine State issue. In addition, a private television platform has also been launched on the You tube channel under the name of YC TV, and it boradcasts content related to Rakhine affairs daily short news, the local economy issues, social issues, conflict issues, and political issues.
AASYC's headquarters is currently based in a liberated zone on the Thai-Myanmar border, and members are working inside the country.
